In 2019, the SARIAS Foundation facilitated the creation of an exceptional CD recording: Johann Sebastian Bach’s legendary Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. Born in Istanbul, Atilla Aldemir is an award-winning violinist and violist, and the solo violist of the MDR Symphony Orchestra. He performed the pieces on a viola – the first time in its history – at St Agnus Church in Köthen. The CD was launched on 6th September 2020 during the Köthen Bach Festival at the same location as it was recorded.

Entry was free of charge, although donations to the Arche Children and Youth Welfare Centre in Köthen were requested.

The Next Generation Fairy Tale Concert

“The Jackal and the Goat’s Little Calf”
The setting of our Ethiopian fairy tale celebrated its première in the Konzerthaus.

Every summer, the Young Euro Classic international music festival invites the best youth orchestras from all over the world to the Berliner Konzerthaus. One of the principal focusses of the festival is inspiring the next generation to take up classical music and related art forms. It must be made easier for children in educationally deprived groups to have access to cultural participation and in many cases that access must be facilitated in the first place. When it is approachable and configured openly, culture can convey a sense of belonging that transcends the boundaries of our own way of life. It was with this in mind that Young Euro Classic collaborated with the SARIAS Foundation in 2020 to develop an innovative format for a Families Day. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic the planned programme could not take place this year. The alternative programme was no less exciting, however.

A little calf is born, but who is the father? The leopard tries to deceive the other animals. How will the other animal characters solve the dispute? Sinem Altan has now set our Ethiopian fairy tale to music for future generations. In three afternoon performances, audiences young and old (aged 6 and over) could listen to actor Nellie Thalbach lend her voice to the animals and read our fairy tale to Sinem Altan’s musical composition in the Kleiner Saal of the Konzerthaus on the Gendarmenmarkt.

Another children’s concert with performer “Hans die Wanze” took place on the Gendarmenmarkt before the event.

In 2019, the SARIAS Foundation supported a concert performed by the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra which took place during the Young Euro Classic Music Festival.

In 2020, the SARIAS Foundation and Young Euro Classic have decided to embark on a long-term collaboration. With the Next Generation family day, the cooperation partners also hope to promote the development of the next generation in order to facilitate interaction between cultures and religions through musical encounters.

The 11th Berliner Stiftungswoche goes online!

14th – 24th April 2020

Once a year since 2010, the Berliner Stiftungswoche (‘Berlin Foundations Week’) has presented the dedicated work of Berlin-based foundations to the public at large. Charitable foundations demonstrate where and how they work through various events, exhibitions and discussions. The Stiftungswoche is a platform for interaction and cooperation. Without the work of these foundations, our society would be greatly worse off!

The coronavirus pandemic will of course affect the upcoming Stiftungswoche with its main theme this year of “Glück heute?” (‘Happiness Today’). In April 2020, it will largely be held online, but will certainly be no less informative.

MÄRCHENLAND – The German Centre for Fairytale Culture was founded to implant fairy tales as a cultural asset into the consciousness of our society. Fairy tales are particularly important in a culturally diverse society: they transcend borders between young and old, rich and poor, East and West… They are an incalculable treasure of accumulated experience and wisdom. Each one contains values that all of humanity has in common, such as love, friendship, loyalty, courage and dedication.

MÄRCHENLAND e.V. is the organiser of the well-known Berlin Fairy Tale Days, which take place every autumn and celebrated their thirtieth anniversary in 2019.  The motto of the very 1st Berlin Fairytale Days in the year the Berlin Wall came down was “Fairytales transcend borders”. This motto was adopted again in the anniversary year 2019 and has lost none of its relevance. After all, it is still important to connect people from different countries and cultures and thereby make borders superfluous.

The 31st Fairy Tale Days in November 2020, like many of the major events in this pandemic year, faced completely new challenges and took place online for the first time.

Just as in 2019, the SARIAS Foundation was also involved in 2020, providing financial support and its own programme of offers. We are delighted to have been able to contribute to the success of the 31st Berlin Fairy Tale Days.
