Wheelchairs for children for Kinderhilfe Harambee e.V.
The SARIAS Foundation is helping with mobility by donating 10 children’s wheelchairs. In partnership with Kinderhilfe Harambee e.V. (children’s charity), these wheelchairs have been sent from Frankfurt to Nairobi. Thanks to Kinderhilfe Harambee e.V. these wheelchairs arrived safely and are now being used by orphans with disabilities.
Dank Harambee e.V. sind die Rollstühle gut angekommen und werden nun von den Kindern genutzt.
Im drittgrößten Slum der Großstadt handelt “Kinderhilfe Harambee” unter schwersten Bedingungen, denn Menschen mit Behinderungen sind für einen Großteil der afrikanischen Gesellschaft praktisch nicht existent. Täglich kämpfen sie gegen die Widerstände, die das Resultat von Korruption und Ignoranz sind, und versuchen trotz der Schwierigkeiten jede Herausforderung bestmöglich zu meistern. Diese Bemühungen und diesen Einsatz unterstützt die SARIAS STIFTUNG.
In einem durch “Kinderhilfe Harambee” entstandenen Tages-Therapiezentrum wird derzeit 60 Kindern ein Zufluchtsort gewährt. Schwerstbehinderte Kinder und Jugendliche werden vor Ort medizinisch versorgt, betreut und gesund ernährt werden. In diesem Refugium finden die Kinder eine Oase des Glücks, wo sie sich in einer humanen und toleranten Umgebung frei bewegen können. Im gefährlichen und rauen Alltag der Slums gibt dieser Ort allen Beteiligten Schutz und die Gewissheit, nicht alleine zu sein. Um sich in dieser Umgebung besser bewegen zu können schenkte die SARIAS STIFTUNG Mobilität in Form von 10 Kinderrollstühlen, die in Deutschland speziell für die Kinder und Jugendlichen ausgewählt wurden. Dabei wurde darauf geachtet, dass verschiedene Modelle für verschiedene Ansprüche, Körpergrößen und Behinderungen dabei sind. Alle Rollstühle wurden mit Kopfstützen und Gurten ausgestattet und direkt zum Frankfurter Flughafen geliefert.
Trotzdem wären die Rollstühle fast nicht mit nach Nairobi geflogen, denn in Anbetracht der Vielzahl von Sperrgepäck war die Fluggesellschaft weniger kulant als erhofft. Gerne hat die SARIAS STIFTUNG die anfallenden Transportkosten übernommen und in Kooperation mit dem Kinderhilfe Harambee e.V. und ihren Therapeuten und Volontären konnten diese Rollstühle von Frankfurt aus auf die Reise nach Nairobi gegangen.

After our storybook “The Jackal and the Goat’s Little Calf” was published, storyteller Britta Behrens narrated the story in every class at the Bruno Taut Grundschule (primary school). A total of 450 children received the book as a gift. Today this storybook was successfully completed with storytelling sessions for Years One and Four.

Fairy tales are stories that encourage and convey values. They offer possible solutions for conflict situations and children identify with the fairy tale heroes.
Fairy tales are an essential building block in a child’s development. They are particularly important in intercultural education: children intuitively perceive the similarities and the unifying elements of fairy tales more strongly than the differences and the perhaps unfamiliar. The stories help children from different cultures get to know each other and discover just how many similarities we all share.
The aim of the SARIAS Foundation is to enable people to discover fairy tales from different cultures in Germany. We are working towards this goal in various projects.
The SARIAS Foundation fairy tale book series
One of our major projects is to publish a fairy tale picture book series as a foundation, filled with fairy tales from a wide variety of cultures and which are still unknown in Germany.
For the first volume we have selected an Ethiopian fairy tale and translated it into German. Fairy tale books need pictures, of course, and illustrator Julie Chovin has created these wonderful pictures for us.
The books have been printed since October 2019 and have since been distributed to children free of charge at several events. If you too would like to receive our book free of charge, please write to us!
For the second volume a Chinese fairy tale is already ready and waiting for some beautiful illustrations. “The Two Melons” is about a good and a bad woman. They both experience a big surprise when they cut open a huge melon… that’s all we’ll reveal!
Telling, acting out, playing, and performing fairy tales…
Narrative and play project in daycare centres and primary schools
When fairy tales are told or acted out, they are easy even for children with little knowledge of German or with other language deficits to understand. We are therefore committed to ensuring that fairy tales become an integral part of language promotion in daycare centres and primary schools: their potential and unifying power can contribute a great deal to providing culturally sensitive education. The SARIAS Foundation is currently working on a new project for this purpose, and you will soon be able to find out more about it here.

30th Berlin Fairytale Days
As part of the Berlin Fairytale Days, we are inviting school classes and daycare groups (ages 5-11) to a special fairy tale hour. Storyteller Britta Behrens will be reading our storybook “The Jackal and the Goat’s Little Calf” in the yurt at the Gartenarbeitsschule Neukölln on 14th and 15th November.
